FAQs of Atkins diet:

What is Atkins diet?

It is a low carbohydrate diet to lose body weight. It is found by Dr. Robert Atkins in 1960. According to this diet, body switches to carb burning to fat burning.

What is the procedure of Atkins diet?

The first phase called induction has the restriction over carbohydrate consumption up to 20 gram per day. Food products containing carbs such as biscuits, rice, milk, etc are not allowed. In the second phase called ongoing weight loss, the carbs are increased to 5grams per day. Here one can switch to fruits, nuts, vegetables, and seeds but still foods such as potatoes, rice, bread, and pasta are limited. In the third phase called pre-maintenance, carbs are still increased by 10 grams per day and allowed starchy foods are bread, pasta and porridge but limited to a very small amount. In the last and fourth phase called lifetime maintenance, one should try to maintain his/her body weight with proper diet and regular exercise. In this phase the carb intake is limited up to 90 grams per day.

Is alcohol not allowed in the die?

Alcohol is strictly not allowed in the induction phase of the diet. It can be allowed in the maintenance phase. The best alcohol choices are scotch, rye, vodka, and gin.

What are the side effects?

Bad breath due to production of ketones is main side effect. One can reduce it by using sugar free chlorophyll, leafy vegetables and lot of water. Second side effect may be leg cramps due to loss of water contents with electrolytes during induction phase. To prevent leg cramps, take mineral products such as calcium, magnesium and potassium. Another common side effect is the headache due to caffeine reduction, food sensitivities, lack of vitamins, etc. To reduce headache take some ibuprofen. Other side effects are tiredness, weakness, dizziness, insomnia and nausea.

How long does it take to show the result?

One can expect to lose about 6 to 10lb in first two weeks of induction, in ongoing phase the loss should be reduced to 1 to 3lb a week and during pre-maintenance, 1lb a week can be expected.
