Atkins diet is a contemporary and a modern diet plan which aims at reducing the carbohydrate content of the food to reduce weight. Atkins diet basically is comprised of protein and fat rich food. The quantity of carbohydrate is greatly reduced all throughout the diet plan. Carbohydrate is metabolized before fats so by reducing the quantity of carbohydrates fats are effectively burnt and hence helps in weight reduction. Atkins diet claims to provide the person with good memory, healthy heart and a disease free life.

Disadvantages

Atkins diet is effective in rapid reduction of weight but it has its own disadvantages. This diet plan goes against the norms of a balanced diet. This diet restricts the quality of food being consumed. It emphasizes more of protein and fat but less carbohydrate intake. It even discourages the consumption of saturated fats. As the diet is restricted in terms of carbohydrates, it can lead to carbohydrate deficiency problems. It can also lead to nausea, headache etc. this diet is disadvantageous as it cuts down some of the important nutrients from food. This high level of protein and fat in the food can lead to serious heart and kidney problems. Excess protein in food over a long period of time can even lead to the wreaking of bones. It is difficult for a vegetarian to follow such a diet because vegetarian food does not have much of option for protein rich food. This form of diet has gained a huge popularity in recent years but its long term effects are still questioned by food specialists. People must consult a doctor before following such a diet as many people are allergic to food like poultry, seafood etc.

Conclusion

Following any diet for weight reduction is not an easy job because a number of restrictions are needed to be strictly followed. People who are accustomed to carbohydrate intake in form of rice or flour face a lot of difficulty in adjusting with the diet which is prescribed. A sudden switching to diet devoid of carbohydrates has its own side effects. Bad breath, nausea, dizziness are very common manifestations of Atkins diet.
