Anyone who is on a low carb diet will need a good carb counter, at least when they first start out. When carbs are restricted, a person has to narrow down what they are eating and know about every single carb they are ingesting on any given day. If they go over by as many as five carbs for what they are supposed to eat, they could mess up their program. This is something that is more important in the early stages of low carb diets, but it is always good information to have handy. The only problem is that many of these counters are different and have different information.

 

If you are on the Atkins program and you have purchased the book, you have one in your hand already. That is, if you have gotten the latest version of the book published in 2002. The carb counter in in the front of the book. This one can be torn out and taken anywhere. There is a more extensive listing of each food and how many carbs in the book as well. These can also be found online. Many of the individual carb counter can be downloaded and printed out.

 

The problem is that many places online have a carb counter of sorts, but they all give different information. This is true for many foods as well. Though a food with less than one carb per serving does not have to list that it has carbs, some nice companies will mark the product as less than one carb rather than zero carbs. Others are not as honest, and that can hurt a good low carb program. If there is ever a question the smart dieter must assume there is one carb and count it as such, especially when there is conflicting information.

 

When it comes to having a carb counter, each person has to make their own decision about what to have and what to skip, and how to count the content of carbs. It is not something that is an exact science anyway, but even a carb counter that is a little off on some foods is better than not having one at all. Many who try to do low carb without really counting each carb they ingest while doing the program often have problems losing weight, and it is usually because they are eating more than they realize, and many of those carbs are hidden ones. That is why having a counter is great because all of the guesswork is taken out of the process.
